The Big Prize

is actually very little, no more than 1 inch long

Fairyslipper Orchid at Washington Park.

I knew I would find one and this is it!

  1. That is absolutely gorgeous! Lucky you! There are several varieties of Lady's Slipper Orchids native to New York State, but they are rare and endangered. I have never seen one. They bloom in June and July. I'm never back in my woods then, because of the poison ivy. Maybe I should brave it, to see if there are any there.

  2. I knew generally where in the park to expect orchids. This little thing was further on from that area along a trail.

It was totally a lucky find. The only one I saw yesterday, though I do see leaves.

Luckily we don't have much in the way of poison ivy and oak here.
